Who is on royal variety 2011
Her performance was breathtaking. See the performances of Leona Lewis and Nicole Scherzinger in our video archive below. The stage of the Lowry was transformed to allow real water to fall as rain for Jonathan Church's production of Singing In The Rain and provided one of the most memorable performance in Royal Variety history, with the amazing Adam Cooper as lead. It was the most incredible production feat in the middle of a 'run as live' variety show , to produce water falling as 'real rain' with the cast of dancers splashing in puddles!
It seemed as if the production team had miraculously pulled it off, to the delight of the audience. That was until the break for the interval, when the Singing In The Rain stage set had to be quickly cleared behind the curtains. Unfortunately, one of the Lowry's theatre staff knocked over a section of the set, cutting off all of ITV's radio communications and VT connections!
The result was a panicked team of technicians and production staff having to re-wire communications frantically through the interval and causing a 45mins delay. However, Peter Kay came to the show's rescue showing his supremacy as a top-flight comedian, with some superb ad-libbing throughout. In the second half, the audience, unperplexed by the delay, were treated to the wonderful sounds of classical crossover quartet Il Divo , before the arrival of Royal Variety favourite and music legend Barry Manilow.
Manilow however was not without his technical problems - whilst doing a duet of Mandy with his former, younger-self presented on a screen , syncing issues caused him to request to re-perform the song.
The producers quickly agreed and so for the first time in Royal Variety history, an artist was allowed to re-record his performance to provide a better production for TV. The audience were delighted by the unexpected events throughout the show and Her Royal Highness Princess Anne clearly enjoyed the uniqueness of the whole occasion! The show concluded with a terrific performance by American legend Tony Bennett , after which a superb finale with the whole cast ended a truly amazing night.

A virtuoso and a maverick, year-old Garrett is trailblazing a unique career as both a classical and crossover performer. His relaxed brilliance and eclectic style has breathed new life into the classical musical world, drawing in an exceptionally broad fan base from the sophisticated black-tie concert hall audience to the head-banging, hipswaying stadium-going youth.
As someone who has spent more hours playing violin than he has sleeping, Garrett is enjoying international superstardom, sweeping up platinum and gold awards around the world for both his CDs and DVDs. Unfortunately, these days, all we seem to hear about from the media are terrible stories of neglect, both in hospitals and care homes - such a sad reflection on nursing today.
There is a warmth and a friendly feeling everyone seems to notice when arriving at Brinsworth. The house is years old, mellow and welcoming. Show posters adorn the hall and staircases and there are scintillating aromas wafting out from the kitchen. There is also a small intimate theatre bar where residents and their friends and family can gather. It is a truly bustling place, always something going on: visitors coming to lunch small charge , musical movements, quizzes, a bi-weekly hairdressing service and bingo, of course.
Art therapy and handicrafts, film shows, Pet Therapy dogs, along with our fortnightly shows performed on the stage and spontaneous piano performances by some of our residents are also part of life at Brinsworth. We have close links with our local junior and infant schools just across the road that come and visit the residents at Christmas and Harvest Festival times and during Book Week, when the children choose a book and come and read to the residents.
For peace and quiet there are always the gardens in summer and the conservatory in which to read the paper. The residents have their own parties, one in the summer and one at Christmas, where they can invite their friends and relatives. She oversees the day to day care of the residents together with her dedicated team of registered nurses and health care assistants. Our staff receive full and continuous training, with most of the courses held at Brinsworth.
Homemade soups, locally sourced meat, fish, fruit and vegetables are all delivered fresh each day to give the residents a varied and nutritious menu. The staffing levels are high; most of my staff have been with me for the majority of my 24 years at the Home. We do not use agencies and retired staff stay on the bank to help out when needed so our residents receive the continuity of care they deserve - 58 staff and 36 residents, not a bad ratio.
The maintenance staff ensure that the fabric of the Home is well maintained and life at Brinsworth continues to run smoothly and our residents are kept safe and comfortable. The rapport we have with relatives and next of kin is very important to us and hopefully makes them feel they can trust us with the care of their loved ones.
The residents and staff of Brinsworth have asked me to say a special thank you to you all on their behalf. They are grateful for your support and hope you have a wonderful evening. The idea was received with great enthusiasm and a considerable sum of money was immediately pledged from across the entertainment industry. By the following April , the entire amount had been raised and the mansion and 5 acres of land became the freehold property of the Music Hall profession. By the end of November , there were ten occupants in residency, including one married couple.
Our resident chef caters for a wide variety of special dietary requirements, depending on the needs of each individual resident. Over the years, and with the continual help and financial support of the entertainment industry, two new wings have been added to Brinsworth House and on both occasions the care home was honoured by the presence of one of its most ardent supporters, the late HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who performed the opening ceremonies.
She was the most wonderful story teller and I delighted in hearing about her years in show business and life as a child in Morecombe. The death of her beloved Scottie, her husband, manager, confidante, line-tester and very best friend, was a blow from which Thora never really recovered. Her daughter Janette was wonderful and she adored her two grandchildren but no one replaced Scottie.
As the years went by, her health began to fail and there were fewer dates in the diary, something that really depressed her. A member of staff came and asked her if she would like tea for her guest. A tray of tea and biscuits was brought, put before Thora and she poured. This is the level of respect Brinsworth shows to all the residents.
Under the wonderful leadership of Matron, Sheila Gould, a devoted staff of nurses, carers, cooks, cleaners, handymen, gardeners, and administrators make sure the quality of care is second to none, something that is recognised by the local authority on its regular but unannounced inspections.
And the care is total care. Live entertainment means a lot to many of the residents who have spent their lives in show business. I so enjoy my regular visits, which have enabled me to share some very special moments with both residents and staff. Each month, a committee meets to allocate grants to those in need. Mega salaries are reserved for the top stars. There are many people in show business whose salaries are not that much above the minimum wage.
When I was playing Widow Twankey at Wimbledon, I had to remember that when the panto season ended I would be all right - I had other work to do. Many of the cast, especially the hard-working chorus, had no idea where their next job would come from. So it only takes illness, an accident or some other unfortunate, unplanned happening for the life of a performer, or one of his or her dependants, to be thrown into chaos, especially financially. Rent and fuel bills have to be paid, house repairs have to be carried out and food needs to be put on the table.
This is where, because of your generosity, the EABF can and does help. But if you scratched the surface a little you would soon discover strong links and friendships with Variety. Her father, James Hird, started his career as a strolling Minstrel on the sands in Morecambe, Lancs, and her mother, Marie Mayor, met him while appearing in a summer show on the Central Pier.
So it was no surprise to me that in her nineties, when she needed a little help and tender loving care, that she asked to visit Brinsworth House. Sure enough, as we walked in, she met old and dear friends and started trading stories and memories, from Blackpool Circus and the Black and White Minstrel Show, to a pianist who had accompanied her as she entertained troops during World War II.
It was at this point that the wisdom and understanding of the staff became so very important. With total love and patience they cared for her, showing kindness and thoughtfulness beyond anything I have ever encountered.
They helped her and they helped me and I will never forget them all. It featured showstopping performances from each and every one of the fantastic finalists. The EABF, in return, arranges for the series winner of the show to appear at the annual Royal Variety Performance, which is held in the presence of a senior member of the British Royal Family and watched by many millions of TV viewers worldwide.
He beat off stiff competition from hotly tipped favourites, Ronan Parke and New Bounce, who finished in second and third places respectively.
