Why waitressing is a good job
Unlike in waitressing, you can call someone up in the last minute to have him or her work your shift. Servers encounter situations that are difficult to deal with but they have to, such as angry or annoying customers. When you experience these situations, you will be able to learn to have patience and just smile and work through them anyway. You will be able to make lots of money during holidays and special days because more people dine in restaurants in those times.
There are also some parties and bigger reservations, meaning, there will be bigger tips for you. Sometimes, the people you work with is something that makes working as a server meaningful. Since you and your co-workers have the same kind of work ethic, you will be able to band together and create a strong bond. Being a server has a lot of positive things, but like any other jobs, there are some downfalls as well.
Here are some of the disadvantages of working as a waiter or waitress. This means that people will rely more on you which can bring you more stress. And there are times that the responsibility increases but the salary stays the same. Meaning, there will be more work for you during these times.
When you work as a server for a long time, there might be some health issues you may encounter such as back and knee problems because of carrying heavy plates and constantly being on your feet. Though this is a positive thing, it can also be a con for those who are apt to spending the money they have. There might be a difficulty with money management when you always have money on hand, especially when you and your co-workers will always go out for a drink after work.
Why are female waitresses so hard for me to get along with? You nailed many great points. Serving is life draining and can make you turn to alcohol to release the stress. People can be rude and others can be great. Some days are perfect while other day you want to run and quit. Working for the restaurant business you have to be ready for anything. When your comfortable it really is hard to leave. Go to school and get your degree if you can and maybe serve or bartend on the side for extra cash but do not make it a life long career!

Can you manage a customer service job? Are you willing to go above and beyond for customers? PROS Always having cash on hand.
You make your money mostly on tips, so leaving with your cash after every shift can be refreshing and extremely motivating. Working less hours, but still making money. Instead of a 9 to 5, 8 hour days, you can make your money in sometimes 5 hours or less. Always active. Serving tables means running around grabbing this and that, carrying trays, bringing plates to tables, etc. By constantly moving you are constantly keeping fit rather than sitting in one chair for hours at a time, staring at a computer screen.
Being around people means hearing interesting stories, interacting and laughing. You have the ability to control your income — a bit. Since most of your income depends on your tips you have a bit of control of how the customers will show their appreciation for your service. The better service you give, they better tips — or at least the better chance of getting a good tip. So if you can charm your way into your hearts and give them the service they need…ka-ching!
The ability to be replaced. A lot of restaurants will allow servers to replace other servers as long as they are equal in their capabilities and experience. Being able to be replaced for a shift is excellent if you want a night off or have plans with family.
With other types of jobs sometimes you have to take a sick or personal day, whereas with waitressing sometimes you can just call someone up last minute and have someone work your shift! Tomorrow is another day, another chance to better your day! Restaurants are always hiring. It may not be the classiest of restaurants, but if you need to move or are stuck without a job you can always turn to serving tables.
You can work in hotels, on cruises, fast food restaurants, family owned restaurants, diners…I mean the choices are endless. As long as there are restaurants, there are jobs for servers. Extra money during the holidays and special days.
Those times of the year bring in more people, bigger reservations, parties, etc. So there are times during the year where you make a little more than usual.
Consider it like your bonus! The good co — workers. What makes working as a server worthwhile sometimes are the people you work with. Your coworkers who have the same kind of work ethic as you will band together and create a strong bond. Employee outings and get-togethers. Sometimes people plan outings such as going out to a bar for a drink after work, playing team sports on your days off, paintball, going to see movies, house parties, barbecues, staff Christmas parties, etc.
CONS With experience and loyalty comes great responsibility. That basically means that the more you know about the restaurant, whether it be from hostess to the back of the house, the more work you may have to do compared to your coworkers. People will rely on you and expect more of you, which could make for even more stress from you. Will you get paid for the extra weight you pull?
Maybe not. Having to work weekends. Always having money on hand. Yes — this is also a pro! But, people who are apt to spending the cash they have could have a major problem with managing their money. Cash is so easy to spend, especially if all the staff is going out for a drink afterwards. After a while — it takes a toll on your body. So many times, servers who have been working for years will feel the effects of carrying heavy plates and constantly being on their feet.
Back problems and knee problems are not uncommon. Being a server puts a lot of stress on your body. No benefits. Whereas other companies give their employees benefits from sick days to dental, most restaurants do not provide that for their employees.
Are you sick? However, if you have a look at your total income at the end of the month, you will often be quite disappointed. One thing is for sure: Becoming a waiter is not suitable in case you want to get rich and if you aspire to plenty of financial wealth, you will be far better off looking for other jobs that pay much better.
Another disadvantage of being a waiter is that you will also often have to deal with difficult people. While most people will be friendly, others will do everything to annoy you since they will simply be in a bad mood and need a scapegoat to release pressure.
Consequently, working as a waiter is not always fun and if you are the type of person who takes those things too personally, chances are that you will not become happy in this profession. While you can earn really good money as a waitress or waiter during on holidays, it can also be really annoying since you will not be able to meet up with your family during those times of the year. Imagine it is Christmas and you will not be able to spend it with your family since you will have to work.
Especially if you have children, this can be quite sad and your children will likely even resent you for this. While some people like to do night shifts, most people hate it since it affects our sleeping rhythm and sleeping problems are rather common due to that. Therefore, if good sleep is really important to you, working as a waiter may also not be the right way to go for you in this regard.
Hence, make sure that you are willing to do plenty of physical work before deciding for becoming a waiter. In fact, multitasking will be urgently necessary since you will have many guests at the same time and have to make sure that everyone is served. Consequently, your brain will also feel tired after finishing your shift as a waiter and you should not underestimate the mental component of the game.
In fact, it is just part of the job and if you are not willing to work on Saturday and Sunday, a job as a waiter is just not suitable for you at all. This is also the reason why many people quit their job as a waiter once they have kids since they rather want to spend their weekends with their families instead of having to serve food and drinks. Many people also only plan to work as a waiter to finance their education so that they can move on to more exciting jobs.
However, since they only earn quite limited amounts of money, many waiters get stuck in their job since it will take them quite long to save money. Consequently, if your plan is to work part-time to finance your degree or other things you urgently need, make sure that you find the exit pretty soon.
Otherwise, you might get lazy and stay a waiter forever. If you have colleagues who are just waiting until their shift will be over and are not motivated at all, you will often have to help them out, which can lead to additional stress for you. It is no secret that waiters often have a pretty low base salary and earn most of their money through tips. Imagine you work in a bar or a restaurant that only has a few guests per day. In such a case, you will not be able to make enough tips to cover your expenses.
Hence, it is crucial that you choose a well-managed location as a waiter since only then will you be able to make good money from your profession.
