Sign In. I grew up in Canberra playing music and guitar, but often found it hard to find people to play with. I had heard about these Girls Rock! I was 21 and burnt out having studied realist theory of changing the world around you, but not being able to apply it.

Suddenly these Girls Rock! Camps seemed like a cool way of creating a world where girls voices were encouraged and seen. A space without cis men, which is especially rare in music. After uni I saved up some money and travelled to Portland for my first Girls Rock! I absolutely loved it and was inspired by all of these young women who were so fearless and cool.

Well, the structure of the programs and their values are the same. Young people form a band on the Monday and have written a song by the end of the week. There is complete freedom of expression. The Girls Rock!

Boston is probably closest to Canberra as it was a bit smaller and a lot less punk than Portland, so it was cool to see the different models the camp could take. I was just a very stubborn 24 year old. People from the American camps put me in touch with Aussies who helped spread the word or volunteered themselves as mentors. I found a venue called Ainsley and Gorman Art Centre where we now run our camps and they were incredibly supportive.

This will be our 5 th year! Totally, and we have an intern program for the people who have participated in the past who want to come back to take on a leadership role. They learn how to be a mentor, how to assemble gear, how to uplift others. And then even just from the Monday to the Friday, you get to watch these kids come out of their shells.
